I’ve seen this idea of making bread cones a few time ago and it seemed so fun to make. I do enjoy bread challenges and I simply had to give these cones a try. I didn’t have cream horns but I really loved improvising and making cones out of paper and aluminum foil.
For the dough I’ve used the recipe I usually do for crescent rolls with slightly few changes. It was a huge success, the cones turned absolutely great and everybody loved them. They are very light and fluffy and wonderfully flavored.
The bread cones can be filled with various fillings, we already tried them out with some tuna salad and some scrambled eggs. Each time they were simply amazing. The filling options are endless and can make a great appetizer for friend or family gatherings. You can also consider filling them with fruits and sweet pastry cream. They will be totally divine, I am sure of that.
I’ve made these cones for about 3 times by now and was a great activity with my little daughters. Rolling the dough was their favorite part. Hope you will try them out and don’t forget to let me know if you do. Enjoy!!
Estonian Kringle – Cinnamon Braid Bread
Barbeque Sweet Rolls
Idea slightly adapted after Cook’n is fun
- 4 cups (500g) bread flour
- 1 ½ tbsp (22g) sugar
- 1 tsp (5g) salt
- 25 g fresh yeast (2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast)
- 1/4 cup (50 ml) water , warm
- 2 eggs
- 2/3 cup (170 ml) milk , warm
- 4 tbsp (60g) butter
- 1 egg , beaten
- sesame and flax seeds
- 16 A4 or Letter size papers
- 8 Aluminum foil sheets
- In a large bowl, mix flour with sugar and salt. Dissolve the fresh yeast in the warm water and add to the flour mixture. Add eggs and milk and mix everything together. Add the butter and knead until the dough is smooth and soft. Cover with a clean dish towel and let it rise for about 1 hour in a warm area, until doubled in size.
- Meanwhile you can prepare the cones. Take 2 sheets of paper and make a cone and cover with aluminum foil, so that paper is not visible anymore. Repeat to make 8 cones.
- Punch dough down and on a floured surface divide into 8 equal parts. Let them rest for 5 minutes.
- Roll each piece of dough into an about 30 inch (80 cm) rope.
- Roll the dough ropes around the aluminum cones. Place onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and let them rest for about 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile you can preheat the oven to 400 F (200C).
- Brush the cones with beaten egg and sprinkle sesame and flax seeds on top.
- Bake for about 16-18 minutes until golden brown.
- Let them cool on wire racks and fill them with your favorite filling. Enjoy!

Can you share the recipe for the filling that you used?
Glad you like them. For the filling in the video I've used a simple tuna salad. Just used can of tuna flakes, and combined with chopped green onion, chopped red bell pepper and corn kernels, salt, pepper. To bind everything together you can either use mayonnaise or simply a bit of yogurt or cream cheese. Whatever you like best.

You can use all purpose flour.. it might need a bit more of flour to same amount of liquid.. otherwise they will turn great.. As for the filling I've used a tuna salad filling, but the solutions are endless.. even a spicy guacamole might be wonderful.. or a great salsa…It's definitely up to you and your tastes.. we even had it once for breakfast with an egg filling and was great..Let me know how it turns for you
Hi! So I’ve been on your site for the past 3 days and I’m hooked! This is the 2nd recipe I tried and I’m in love! It was so easy to do and your video really helped me visualize everything. I halved the recipe and substituted all-purpose flour (I didn’t have bread flour). My dough wasn’t so sticky though. The house smelled wonderful and my kids are having leftovers today! They liked the process so much, they’ve been making play dough bread rolls all morning. This recipe is a keeper!

At 400 degrees the letter paper doesn’t catch on fire?
no.. not at all.. I've made this recipe several time and they behaved perfect. I could even re-use the cones.
Can the milk in this recipe be replaced by Apple juice or water?

can i freeze the cones? and if i can should i freeze them before or after baking
I would freeze them after baking, I did that several times.. right after they cool.. they will be great.
Awesome idea – have made a couple of times now – I just make them smaller and more in number – great for lunches.

I love your website and even am beginning to enjoy the music; which is a little different. The bread cones recipe was easy to follow and came out pretty good; the most difficult part was trying to make the “cones” with the paper & foil. Is there anything I can put in the recipe to make the rolls more tasty; they were kind of bland. Thanks in advance for your advice.
This idea is so beautiful but it doesn’t work for me. I’m passionate about baking and I think I’m pretty good at following recipes. My dough came out so dry every time – even before adding the butter – and I did this recipe twice already. I watched the video at least 10 times to see why I’m doing wrong but I can’t figure it out. Any idea? I really want it to work. Thanks

Just made these today and dipped them in lye so now I have pretzel cones and they came out great. I used cream horn molds and got twelve out of the given dough recipe. Thanks for the idea and instructions!
