Smoked Salmon Carbonara

This Smoked Salmon Carbonara is so easy to prepare that you don’t need more than 15 minutes to have this all done and ready to be served. It is a quick meal,  looks appetizing and your guests or family will enjoy it.

Pasta Carbonara is an Italian pasta dish based on eggs, cheese, pancetta or bacon, and black pepper.

I aimed to create a slightly healthier Carbonara recipe by substituting smoked salmon for bacon. Additionally, I included lemon zest and chives as garnish to enhance both the flavor and appearance of the dish. Unlike traditional recipes, this version excludes additional cream, relying solely on eggs and Parmesan for creaminess. The result exceeded my expectations; it was incredibly delicious.

How to make Smoked Salmon Carbonara

Begin by cooking the pasta until it’s al dente in lightly salted water.

Meanwhile, in a bowl, whisk together the eggs, cheese, and pepper. Set this mixture aside.

Heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the garlic until it’s softened, then add the salmon. Warm the salmon through; since it’s already cooked, it just needs heating. Remove the pan from the heat.

Once the pasta is cooked, drain it, reserving some of the cooking water. Return the pasta to the pan with the garlic and salmon. Stir to ensure the pasta is well coated.

Next, add the egg mixture and chives to the pasta. Toss everything together thoroughly, allowing the heat from the pasta to cook the eggs. Adjust the consistency with the reserved cooking water as needed.

Finally, serve the dish with freshly ground black pepper, grated Parmesan cheese, and a sprinkle of lemon zest on top.

This is surprisingly light – I usually think of carbonara as a rich and heavy pasta dish. Can’t wait to give this a try!

Thanks for the great recipe. I made a few adjustments (used canned salmon from Costco, no garlic, and butter instead of olive oil) and it was a HUGE hit for the whole family!!

  9. Sounds fantastic. So nice to find a smoked salmon sauce that is not cream based.

I am planning on making this for the family this weekend and am inputtting it into my nutrition app. Quick question: Any idea on the size of a serving? I am guessing about 8 oz or so from the ingredient list.

    Thanks

Sorry for the late answer, hope you tried this recipe. You are right, the recipe I've shared with you makes about 2 servings about 8 oz each.

Delicious! I added fresh asparagus and frozen petit pois to the pasta at the last minute for colour, crunch and green goodness. A very well received Friday supper!

Hi Ella, this sounds really nice and I bet it will taste amazing too. I have a question, How much grams of chives do I have to add?
