The American Flag Cake is a burst of freshness, colors, and fruity goodness that will captivate everyone at your gathering. It’s the perfect dessert to bring to a party, and when you slice into it, your friends and family will be absolutely delighted.

How to make American Flag Cake

Start by making the chocolate cake. Continue with the chocolate liqueur syrop and cream cheese frosting. Decorate the cake with fresh berries and cream cheese frosting.

Prepare the chocolate cake.

Line a 9.5×7 inch (24×18 cm) baking pan with parchment paper and preheat your oven at 350F (180C). In a bowl mix all the dry ingredients then set aside. In a large bowl mix the oil, eggs and sugar, until combined. Add in the buttermilk and mix until combined, then add in all the dry ingredients, mix until all comes together, at the end add the hot coffee. The batter will be thin, that’s just the way it is supposed to be. Bake for about 50-60 mins, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.

Prepare the chocolate liqueur syrup.

While the cake is in the oven make the chocolate liqueur syrup. Boil the water and sugar for 5 minutes, remove from the stove and allow to come to room temperature. Now you can add the chocolate liqueur. You can leave out the liqueur if you don’t like it or replace it with any store-bought liqueur you like.

After the cake is cooled, take a bread knife and level it, you need to obtain a flat rectangular shape and place it on a serving platter.

Prepare the cream cheese frosting.

Take a large bowl and mix together the cream cheese, powdered sugar and heavy cream, until stiff peaks form. Set aside.

Assemble the American Flag Cake.

First, using a brush or a spoon, spread the chocolate liqueur over the entire cake. Spread 4 tablespoons of homemade jam over the chocolate cake. I’ve used blueberry jam, but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Using an offset spatula, gently spread a thin layer of cream cheese frosting over the jam, just enough to cover it, try to level it as smooth as possible.

Now you can arrange the  blueberries in rows on the top left corner to form the “star” portion of the flag. Line the strawberry slices in 3 rows to form the “stripes”.

Take a piping bag fitted with a big star tip and pipe the frosting between the strawberry rows. Take another pipping bag fitted with a very small star tip and pipe little white stars over the blueberries. And there you have it, the American Flag Cake!

So, go ahead and make this American Flag Cake the centerpiece of your party. Its irresistible flavors and patriotic charm will make it a memorable treat for all.  Tag us on Instagram with your photos if you try it out. Enjoy!
