These Banana Zucchini Chocolate Chip Muffins are soft, moist, and naturally sweetened with ripe bananas and honey. Finely grated zucchini adds moisture without overpowering the flavor, while dark chocolate chips add little pockets of chocolate in every bite.

They are an easy way to combine bananas and zucchini in one delicious muffin, especially when you have extra zucchini to use. You won’t really taste the zucchini, but it helps keep the muffins wonderfully tender.

I also love that these muffins are made without refined sugar. The sweetness comes from ripe bananas and honey, with a little cinnamon and vanilla adding extra flavor.

They make a great breakfast, lunchbox snack, afternoon treat, or quick homemade snack. And if you have picky eaters at home, they’re a fun way to sneak some zucchini into a sweet treat.

Why You’ll Love These Banana Zucchini Muffins

  • Soft and moist – zucchini and ripe bananas help keep the muffins tender.
  • Naturally sweetened – made with ripe bananas and honey instead of refined sugar.
  • Easy to make – the batter comes together quickly in one bowl.
  • A great way to use zucchini – especially during zucchini season.
  • Chocolate chips make them extra delicious – because a little chocolate makes everything better.
  • Perfect for breakfast or snacks – easy to pack for school, work, or a day out.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • All-purpose flour – provides structure while keeping the muffins soft.
  • Baking soda and baking powder – work together to help the muffins rise and become light and fluffy.
  • Cinnamon – adds warm spice that works beautifully with banana and zucchini.
  • Zucchini – adds moisture and tenderness. Use finely grated zucchini and squeeze out as much excess liquid as possible.
  • Ripe bananas – provide natural sweetness, moisture, and plenty of banana flavor.
  • Eggs – help bind the ingredients and give the muffins structure.
  • Honey – naturally sweetens the muffins and adds a subtle floral flavor.
  • Vegetable oil – keeps the muffins moist and tender.
  • Vanilla extract – enhances the banana and chocolate flavors.
  • Semisweet chocolate chips – add pockets of melted chocolate throughout the muffins.

A note about the zucchini

The zucchini contains a lot of water, so squeezing it well is important. Too much liquid can make the muffins overly wet and affect their texture.

You don’t need to squeeze every last drop of moisture out, but remove enough excess liquid so the grated zucchini is moist rather than dripping wet.

How to make Banana Zucchini Chocolate Chip Muffins

Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lining a 12-cavity muffin pan with paper liners. Grate the zucchini using the small holes of a grater, sprinkle salt over the grated zucchini, and let them sit for 3-5 minutes. Transfer the zucchini to a kitchen towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible, then set aside.

In a large bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Add the eggs, honey, and vanilla extract, mixing well to combine. Stir in the oil until fully incorporated. Next, add the flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon, and mix until just combined.

Gently fold in the squeezed zucchini and chocolate chips, being careful not to overmix the batter. Divide the batter equally among the muffin cups and sprinkle additional chocolate chips on top.

Bake the muffins for 20-25 minutes until they turn golden brown. Let them cool slightly before enjoying these delicious and moist treats! If you try them out, make sure to share the photos with me on Instagram. Would love to see how they turn out for you.

Tips for Making the Best Banana Zucchini Muffins

Use ripe bananas

The riper the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful your muffins will be. Bananas with plenty of brown spots are ideal.

Squeeze the zucchini well

This is probably the most important step in the recipe. Zucchini releases a lot of water as it sits, so squeeze the grated zucchini well before adding it to the batter.

Don’t overmix the batter

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until combined. Overmixing can make muffins dense instead of soft and fluffy.

Don’t overfill the muffin cups

Divide the batter evenly between the 12 muffin cups so they bake at the same rate and rise evenly.

Add extra chocolate chips on top

A few extra chocolate chips sprinkled over the batter before baking give the muffins a beautiful bakery-style finish.

Don’t overbake

Bake until the muffins are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.

Can You Taste the Zucchini in These Muffins?

Not really. The zucchini has a very mild flavor, especially when combined with ripe bananas, cinnamon, vanilla, and chocolate chips.

Instead of making the muffins taste strongly of vegetables, the zucchini mainly adds moisture and tenderness. This makes them a good option if you’re looking for an easy way to use zucchini in a sweet recipe.

What Kind of Zucchini Should I Use?

Regular green zucchini works perfectly. Choose small to medium zucchini when possible, as they tend to have a more delicate texture and fewer large seeds.

For this recipe, grate the zucchini using the small holes of a box grater.

Can I Use Frozen Bananas?

Yes. Frozen bananas can be used as long as they are completely thawed first.

Drain off any excess liquid after thawing, then mash the bananas well before adding them to the batter. Since the amount of moisture can vary, make sure your final batter has a thick muffin-batter consistency.

Can I Use Chocolate Chunks Instead of Chocolate Chips?

Yes. Chopped semisweet or dark chocolate works well instead of chocolate chips.

You can also use milk chocolate if you prefer sweeter muffins, or dark chocolate for a richer flavor.

Can I Make These Muffins Without Honey?

The honey contributes both sweetness and moisture, so I wouldn’t simply leave it out without replacing it.

You could experiment with maple syrup as a liquid sweetener, but the texture and sweetness may be slightly different.

Can I Make These Muffins Gluten-Free?

Yes, although I haven’t tested the recipe with a gluten-free flour blend. A good 1:1 gluten-free all-purpose flour blend would be the best option to try.

Choose a blend designed for baking that contains a binder such as xanthan gum.

How to Store Banana Zucchini Muffins

Once completely cooled, store the muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for about 2–3 days.

For longer storage, refrigerate them or freeze them.

If refrigerated, let them come to room temperature or warm them briefly before serving for the best texture.

Can I Freeze Banana Zucchini Muffins?

Yes. These muffins freeze well.

Let them cool completely, then place them in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to 2–3 months.

Thaw at room temperature or warm briefly in the microwave before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my zucchini muffins too wet?

The most common reason is excess moisture from the zucchini. Make sure you squeeze the grated zucchini well before adding it to the batter. Very large zucchini can also contain more water.

Why did my muffins sink in the middle?

This can happen if the muffins are underbaked, the batter was overmixed, or there was too much moisture in the zucchini. Make sure the zucchini is well squeezed and bake until the centers are fully set.

Can I make these banana zucchini muffins into mini muffins?

Yes. Use a mini muffin pan and reduce the baking time. Start checking them early, as smaller muffins will bake much faster than regular-size muffins.

Can I use whole wheat flour?

You can replace part of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour, but using 100% whole wheat flour will produce denser muffins. For a softer texture, I would start by replacing about half of the all-purpose flour.
